Using different felting techniques i’ve spent some time exploring uses for felt. However I kept coming back to furniture. Why?
For me, furniture utilises and demonstrates wool’s best properties. Warmth and comfort.
The grey felt is commercially needled felt, made by Buckfast Spinning Co. Bang on my local brief.
The needled felt sheet is very strongly bonded together wool (one of the features of felting) and makes for a great natural reinforcement (with a suitable resin). I intend to explore structural possibilites of felt further within furniture.
Hand needle felting takes a lot of time. Therefore I have realised there is potential in a portable bench top needling machine to bridge the gap between small scale hand production and commercial production. These machines could be issued to members of the local community, who could be contracted to manufacture felt sheet / blocks / blanks for me to use. This is a great parallel to the Harris Tweed model of weaving in the community.
